“My family has deeply shaped who I am and how I express myself through my art. I grew up in a very art-filled environment. My parents are doctors in their fields of study- my mother has her doctorate in Ethnomusicology in Latin American Studies of Baroque music, and my father has his in philosophy and theology. So, as you can imagine, with an opera singer/musician for a mother a theologian/Anglican priest for a father, and two very talented sisters I gravitated to observe my surroundings deeply and express myself boldly from a young age. I spent much of my youth living in South America and have moved across North America throughout my adult life. Travel has been a constant throughout my life and has profoundly affected my creation practice. With it, I fell in love with the art of storytelling and the different ways art takes form. I take inspiration from my experiences in multi-cultural settings and learning from the artists around me.

I have been a practicing artist since 2017 and a published artist since 2020. I find a deep sense of purpose, freedom, and gratitude through self-expression, and it is ultimately that which I hope to help others experience through my art.”

“Life and culture are at the heart of the subject matter of contemporary artist Isabella Penner. The artist examines and responds to her natural surroundings and the culture that makes up the fabric of society. In particular, the vibrant, colourful and energetic culture of South America captivates and inspires her imagination.

Penner describes her work to be vibrant, frequently using pattern and contrast throughout her pieces. Her aesthetic is influenced by her time spent living in Bolivia. “I lived in Bolivia for a significant amount of my youth, and it was here that I fell in love with the use of colour and the influence art has on people, community and culture.”

Her preferred medium is acrylic on canvas, as well as ink on paper.

Isabella would like to thank Gordon R Johnston for the inspiration she receives from his artwork and friendship and for his support on her journey of becoming an artist.

Currently residing in Edmonton, Canada, Isabella is available for commission upon request.”
